Privacy Policy

Storied Archive helps a family record its stories in a loved one's own voice, transcribe them, search them, and keep them for the people who come after. Those recordings are among the most personal things a person can share, and this policy explains in plain language what we collect, why, who can see it, and how you stay in control.

Storied Archive is operated by Revoice LLC, a Texas limited liability company ("Revoice," "we," "us"). If you have any question about this policy or your information, contact us at support@storiedarchive.com.

Information we collect

We collect only what the service needs to do its job:

• Voice recordings and audio. The recordings a storyteller makes when answering a question.
• Transcripts. The text our software produces from those recordings so stories can be read and searched. Transcripts are part of the service rather than part of your content, and our Terms of Service explain what that means. It does not change anything in this policy: a transcript is still personal information about you, it is still covered by every protection and every right described here, and deleting a recording still deletes its transcript.
• Photographs. Images a member attaches to a story or to a question, and images a member adds to a person on the family tree, including people who are not on the app. A tree photo belongs to whoever uploaded it and is deleted when that person deletes their data. Photos can be reported.
• Display names and nicknames. How family members appear to one another.
• Birth date. If you offer a story to the Community, your full birth date, used to confirm that you are 18 or older and to help place your stories in the right decade. It is never shown to anyone. Listeners see only an approximate age, like "in their 70s."
• Community activity. If you listen in the Community, the thanks you give and any reports or blocks you make. These are tied to your account. Storytellers see how many people thanked a story, not who. A storyteller is never told who reported or blocked them.
• Email address. Used to sign you in (we use a one-time email code, not a password) and to send the notifications you have turned on.
• Family relationships. How members are related (for example "my mother," "Nana"), which powers questions and search.
• Device push tokens. An identifier your device provides so we can send notifications, if you allow them.
• Limited usage and diagnostic data. Anonymous, aggregate activity counts and crash or error reports that help us keep the service working. These do not include the content of your stories.
• Website visit logs. When you visit storiedarchive.com, our web host keeps standard server logs: your IP address, the page you asked for, the time, your browser type, and the page that sent you. We use them only for security and troubleshooting, and they are deleted after 30 days. They do not record cookies, and they are not used for analytics or advertising.

How we use your information

• To present a daily question and record the answer.
• To transcribe recordings so they can be read and searched.
• To let the family search the archive and ask questions of it.
• To assemble answers over time into a living biography of the storyteller.
• To let a storyteller who chooses to offer a story to the Community share it, and to review it before anyone hears it.
• To notify family members about new questions, answers, and invitations you have opted into.
• To operate, secure, support, and improve the service.

How your recordings are handled

We want to be explicit about this, because it is not obvious from tapping a Record button. When a story is saved, its audio is uploaded to our servers so your family can play it back and search it, which is the purpose of the app. The transcript is produced in one of two ways: by a third-party speech-to-text service, or, on supported Apple devices, by Apple's on-device speech recognition, which runs locally so the audio is not sent to Apple. Android devices always use the third-party service.

Features that search the archive, write the biography, or prepare a story for the Community send transcript text to third-party artificial intelligence providers to produce a result. Writing a biography also sends the names and relationships in the family tree, so that people are named and described correctly. We never send your photos, your email address, or your account login to these providers.

A biography may include and quote stories that other family members told about the person it is about. It only uses a story when everyone who can read that biography can already hear the story, and it always says who told it.

We do not use your voice to identify you or anyone else, and we do not create or keep voiceprints or any other biometric identifier from your recordings. Your recordings are kept so your family can listen to them, and converted to text so they can be read and searched.

Who can see your information

Storied Archive is built around a family, not the open internet. What you record stays within your family's archive unless you offer a story to the Community, on the terms below:

• The storyteller controls the audience of each story. When a story is saved, its teller chooses who can hear it: everyone in the family, a specific family, selected people, or no one yet (a story can be sealed to open on a future date).
• Shared stories are a family archive. A story shared with the family is meant to outlive the moment and the teller, so it stays part of the family's archive even if the teller later leaves, attributed to their name. You can choose to appear as "a family member" instead.
• Our staff do not read your family's content. Our operators work from metadata only. There are two exceptions. Content a family member formally reports may be reviewed by an operator while that report is open, so we can act on illegal or harmful material. And a story offered to the Community is reviewed before anyone hears it, by a person at Storied Archive, by automated tools, or both, as is any Community story a listener reports.
• We do not sell your information and we do not share it for advertising.

The Community

The Community is an optional place in the app where a storyteller can offer a story to be heard by other people who use Storied Archive, beyond their family. Nothing leaves a family unless its storyteller offers it. You must be 18 or older to offer a story. After a storyteller's death, the person who holds their archive as their beneficiary may offer a story for them.

The Community is open only to people signed in to Storied Archive. It is not published on the open web.

When a story is offered, listeners can see and hear:

• the storyteller's first name and an approximate age, like "in their 70s";
• their photo, only if they turn on "Show my photo";
• a copy of the recording and its transcript, with the names and words the storyteller chose to take out, and any words we take out when we review it, silenced in the audio and marked as removed in the text;
• the question the story answers, and a short quote the storyteller picks;
• a page of all of that storyteller's Community stories, only if they turn on "Let listeners hear my stories together."

Listeners never see the storyteller's family name, their family, their email address, their birth date, or any story they have not offered. Follow-up stories are offered one at a time, never automatically.

A storyteller can remove a story from the Community at any time. Deleting the story, narrowing who can hear it, or deleting their account also takes it out of the Community. Leaving a family does not, so to take a story out, remove it from the Community. Removing a story stops anyone hearing it from then on, but it cannot undo what listeners have already heard. We may also decline or remove a Community story, as our Terms of Service explain.

How we store and protect it

• Your data is encrypted in transit and at rest.
• Story content is protected with per-family content keys, kept separate from operational secrets.
• Access is limited by least-privilege controls, and third-party keys are kept on our servers rather than in the app on your phone.
• No security is perfect, and we cannot promise absolute security, but we hold your recordings to the standard their sensitivity deserves.

Where your data is processed

Storied Archive is operated from the United States, and your information is processed and stored on servers in the United States. If you use the app from another country, you understand that your information is transferred to and handled in the United States, where privacy laws may differ from those where you live.

When we may disclose information

We do not sell your information or share it for advertising. We may disclose information only in these limited situations:

• to the service providers listed below who process it on our behalf, under contract, solely to run the service;
• to comply with the law, a valid legal request, or legal process;
• to protect the rights, property, or safety of Revoice, our users, or the public, including to investigate or prevent fraud, abuse, or harm, and to meet our reporting obligations for illegal content;
• as part of a merger, acquisition, or sale of assets, in which case we will seek to bind the successor to this policy and will notify you of any change in who controls your information.

Service providers we rely on

We use service providers for hosting, storage, transcription, and artificial intelligence processing. We share information with them only so they can provide those services to us. If you would like to know which providers we use, contact us and we will tell you.

Artificial intelligence

Artificial intelligence is how Storied Archive works, rather than an optional layer on top of it. It turns a recording into text, builds the index that makes the archive searchable, suggests a title for a story, tags the people a story mentions, answers the questions you ask of the archive, and assembles the biography. When a story is offered to the Community, it also suggests names and words the storyteller may want to take out, how to file the story, such as its decade and topics, and anything a reviewer should look at closely, such as graphic details or someone's contact information. The storyteller decides what is taken out, and we may take out more when reviewing the story, in which case we tell the storyteller.

Answers and biography sections are drawn from what your family recorded and cite the recordings they came from, so you can go and hear the original. Like any such system it can be inaccurate or incomplete, so treat what it produces as a way into the recordings rather than a replacement for them.

Keeping and deleting your data

We keep your information for as long as your account and your family's archive are active. We do not delete an archive simply because it has been quiet, because for a storyteller a long silence may be exactly when the archive matters most. The website's visit logs described above are separate from the app and are deleted automatically after 30 days.

You are always in control, through two clearly labeled choices in the app:

• Leave the family. Removes your private data (your saved questions and profile) and your active participation. Stories you gifted to the family stay in the archive, attributed to your name. Your account is kept dormant with the minimum needed to sign back in if you are invited, and nothing else. Stories you offered to the Community stay there until you remove them.
• Delete all my data. The full erasure right. It removes everything you authored from every family at once (your recordings, transcripts, photos, and profile) and deletes your sign-in and email as well. Any story you offered to the Community is hidden from it at once and removed when the deletion becomes permanent.

Both take effect immediately (your content is hidden right away) and become permanent after a 30-day grace period during which you can undo the action. A few honest limits: other people's content that referred to you is not deleted, but your attribution is removed from it; ordinary backups are not edited one record at a time, so after the 30-day grace period remaining copies in our backups are erased within 180 days, so your data is gone from our systems and our backups within about seven months; de-identified data may be retained; and content we are legally required to preserve (for example material reported as child sexual abuse, which we must report to and preserve for authorities) is held until that obligation ends.

Legacy and stories left for later

A storyteller can seal a story to open on a future date, and can designate what happens to their archive after they pass. A departed or deceased member's name stays with their stories as honest attribution and as their legacy, unless they chose to appear anonymously. These arrangements are set by the storyteller, and we will honor a valid legal request from an authorized person consistent with applicable law.

Your rights

Depending on where you live, you may have the right to access, correct, export, or delete your personal information, and to object to or restrict certain processing. The deletion tools above satisfy the right to erasure. To exercise any right, use the in-app controls or email support@storiedarchive.com. We will not discriminate against you for exercising a right.

One point worth being plain about, because our Terms of Service treat transcripts as part of the service. The app's own export gives you your recordings and your photographs, not transcript files. That is a limit on a product feature, and it is not a limit on your legal rights. If you have a right to a copy of the personal information we hold about you, that right covers transcripts of your own voice as much as anything else, and we will provide them when you ask. Email us and we will not make you argue for it.

Photographs and metadata

When you add a photo, we remove its embedded GPS location by default before it is stored. We keep the image and its association with the story or question it belongs to. We do not build features on a photo's embedded capture date.

Children

Storied Archive is intended for people 13 and older, and you must be at least 13 to hold an account. It is not directed to children under 13, and we do not knowingly collect personal information from them. A child can still be part of a family's story: recorded as a voice in a parent's telling, or listening on a parent's device, without holding their own account. If you believe a child under 13 has created an account, contact support@storiedarchive.com and we will delete it.

Changes to this policy

If we make a material change, we will update the date above and, where appropriate, notify you in the app or by email before the change takes effect.
